About us

University College London (UCL), located in the heart of the historical area of Bloomsbury in central London, UK, is one of the top-rated universities in the world. The National Physical Laboratory (NPL), located in Teddington, South West London, is a world-leading centre of excellence in measurement science, engineering and technology. UCL and NPL wish to hire an Associate Professor (Reader) in Alternative Computing, who will be based at the London Centre for Nanotechnology and Department of Physics & Astronomy at UCL and the Quantum Materials and Sensors Group at NPL. The LCN is both a department at UCL and a broader three-university network involving UCL, King’s College and Imperial College London.

About the role

We seek an ambitious and talented individual who will instigate and lead a research collaboration between UCL and NPL in the field of alternative computing (for example, though not restricted to, neuromorphic computing) aimed at reducing the world’s energy consumption while increasing computing capability for next-generation applications (e.g. in machine learning or artificial intelligence). You will also actively lead the development of links between NPL and the London-wide LCN network, will contribute to the teaching programme of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and will supervise research students. You will become a member of the LCN and the Condensed Matter and Materials Physics (CMMP) group in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at UCL, as well as a member of the Quantum Materials and Sensors Group at NPL.
