International Year of Quantum Award – Call Now Open

The Materials for Quantum Network is currently inviting applications for funding for International Year of Quantum Awards. These awards aim to support events and activities during the International Year of Quantum that align with the networks goal of bringing together the UK’s materials and quantum technologies communities and/or, promoting materials for quantum technologies. We expect to support around 10 awards up to £1000 each*. 

Who can apply? 

The applicant must be a registered member of M4QN from a UK HE institution.  

When is the call open? 

The call is open on 14th April 2025 and will close on 12th May 2025. 

 What is eligible? 

The award can support the following costs: 

  • Travel and subsistence 
  • Catering (not including alcohol) 
  • Equipment or consumables for public engagement and outreach activities 

The award does not fund research, and the following costs are not eligible in this award: 

  • Salary 
  • Research consumables  

All costs must comply with UKRI policy. 

What we’re looking for 

M4QN aims to bring together the UK’s materials and quantum technologies communities and therefore, awards will be given to applications that align with this goal. The Award should facilitate knowledge exchange, collaboration, enhancement of expertise, and any other activities that are relevant to the overall aim of the Network and goals of its Interest Groups

Applicants must complete and submit the application form by 12th May 2025

What is the review process? 

Applications will be evaluated by a panel chaired by the Outreach and Education Thematic Interest Group. 

General information 

  • The activity must take place within the International Year of Quantum. This first round of awards is for activities taking place before 31st August 2025, we hope to run a second round for activities later in the year for activities up until 31st December 2025. 
  • Recipients of the award will be required to provide a written report on the outcomes, provide full evidence of expenditure, and will be profiled on the M4QN media accounts. 
  • *We expect to make awards up to a maximum of £1000 each, if your activity requires more support than this you can contact the M4QN directors to make a case for additional support. 
  • If travel is awarded, recipients are responsible for checking the latest travel guidance for their proposed destination and, arranging their own travel documents. 
  • Recipients must abide by their institution’s guidance on data protection and intellectual property. Further guidance on Trusted Research is provided by the National Protective Security Authority
